Bossier City, LA - Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs goaltender John DeCaro has been named this week's Oakley Central Hockey League Goaltender of the Week, the league announced today. DeCaro's award is the first such honor to go to a Mudbugs player this season.
DeCaro, 27, started all three games last week for Bossier-Shreveport and did not surrender a single third-period goal as the team went 3-0 against Texas, Rio Grande Valley and Colorado. The third-year Mudbug made 93 saves in the three victories, posting a 2.61 goals-against average and a.921 saves percentage along the way.
DeCaro started off the week making 28 saves as the Mudbugs knocked off the rival Brahmas 4-2 on Tuesday night. He then stopped 27 shots Friday against the Killer Bees, holding Rio Grande Valley off the scoreboard over the last 38 minutes of the game as the Mudbugs won 6-3.
DeCaro turned in his best performance of the week Saturday against an Eagles club ranked first in the CHL in scoring. The 6-3, 200-pound netminder turned aside 38 shots and shut down Colorado's offense for the final 35 minutes of regulation and overtime as his teammates rallied from two goals down to tie the game. DeCaro then put the exclamation point on the week with an assist on Travis Clayton's overtime game-winning goal as the 'Bugs beat the Eagles 4-3.
A two-time winner of the league's Most Outstanding Goaltender award, DeCaro has won his last four starts to hold a 14-8-1 record this season with a 2.97 GAA and a.908 SV% in 23 appearances. He is the second-winningest goaltender in Mudbugs history with 64 victories and holds single-season CHL records for goals-against average, saves percentage, shutouts and shutout streak.
