Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears
organization is working hard to build a strong team to defend their
Southern Professional Hockey League title. With the completion of
several strong offensive player signings, head coach Scott Hillman has
been focusing on the goaltending and defensive positions. Shawn Doucet
and Andrew Gallant are the two latest additions.
Shawn
Doucet, a 5'9" center from Bathurst, New Brunswick, has a strong
background in Major Junior Hockey and the Canadian Interuniversity
Sports (CIS) league. Doucet started his hockey career with the
Acadie-Bathurst Titans of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
in 2001. He played 134 games with the Titans over three seasons. During
that time, he scored 27 goals and had 36 assists with only 61 penalty
minutes. Doucet spent one year with the Grande Prairie Storm of the
Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) before going to Brock University,
where he was the 2005-2006 Rookie of the Year.
"We
expect Shawn to contribute significantly as a rookie in the SPHL. He is
a very responsible defensive player but also has great hands and vision
with the puck. With three years of Major Junior experience and two
solid years in the CIS we expect Shawn to make a smooth transition into
the professional game. We look forward to his arrival in Knoxville,"
commented Coach Hillman.
The other addition to the team
is goalie Andrew Gallant. The 26-year-old played for Manhattan (N. Y.)
College (NCAA Division III) and built an impressive set of credentials.
He was the ECAC West College Player of the Year, USCHO.com National
Player of the Year and the Sid Watson Award National Player of the Year
during his senior year (06-07). That same year the Valiants finished
the season with the number one ranking in the country. The following
season, Gallant played for the Arizona Sundogs of the Central Hockey
League and the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL. His career
goals-against-average is 2.11.
"I believe Andrew has the
maturity, character and skill level to follow a very successful line of
Ice Bear goaltenders such as Jamie Ronayne and Kirk Irving. We spoke to
Andrew last season and were very impressed with him as a young
professional. Again this year we hope to have a few young goalies that
will really be able to push each other. Signing a goalie with a resume
like Andrew's and having first-hand knowledge of his skill level, makes
us very excited about what lies ahead for the season. He has proven he
can play the game at the AA level and is hungry to put up strong
numbers in hopes of moving his career forward and helping our club win
hockey games. He was named the very best in the country at the NCAA
Division III level which shows that he is ready to compete night in and
night out," said Hillman.
