Laredo, TX - The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League announced Wednesday that they have signed rookie defenseman Devin Featherstone for the 2008-09 season. Featherstone spent the last two seasons playing for the University of Lethbridge (CIS) in Lethbridge, Alberta.
A Calgary, Alberta Native, Featherstone served as the Pronghorns assistant captain last season, where he scored two goals, and handed out nine assists, totaling 11 points, while also picking up 91 PIM's.
"Devin is a great kid. He's absolutely wonderful to talk to, and we're very excited to have him here in Laredo", said Bucks head coach and general manager Terry Ruskowski. "Our fans will really be drawn to him because he loves to hit, and hit hard. He will make guys think twice before crossing the blue line".
Featherstone, 6'1, 211 pounds, put up 32 points in his two seasons (59 games) in Lethbridge, scoring nine goals with 23 assists, to go along with 195 penalty minutes.
Featherstone not only puts out fires on the ice, but off of it as well. The Bucks newcomer is working this summer as a firefighter in his native province of Alberta.
"I guess fireman is one heck of a nickname for Devin I would say", Ruskowski joked.
Prior to his two college seasons, Featherstone played four seasons of junior hockey for the Prince George Cougars of the WHL. There he earned the reputation of being a hard-nosed defenseman, stock piling 422 penalty minutes in 271 games.
"Devin is a solid, stay at home defenseman, he will make sure that his end is taken care of", Ruskowski said. "He will work great with our other d-men that we have here".
In his junior career with the Cougars Featherstone scored 17 goals, with 49 assists for 66 points. In 10 career playoff games in the WHL, Featherstone handed out three assists while picking up 18 PIM's.
"I like the way he plays, he's exactly what we are looking for in a defenseman", Ruskowski said. "He played his entire four-year junior career for one team, and that shows us that he performed quite well for them".
