Laredo, TX - The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League announced Thursday that they have signed rookie defenseman Jeff Gilbert for the 2008-09 season. Gilbert spent the last four seasons playing for Division I Robert Morris University (NCAA) in Pennyslvania.

Gilbert, a native of Barrie, Ontario, played in 118 games in his four years with the Colonials, scoring 16 goals, with 27 assists for 43 points. Gilbert piled up over 200 penalty minutes, while being a key player in the CHA playoffs in all four of his seasons.

"Jeff is one of our D-men of the future", said Bucks head coach and General Manager Terry Ruskowski. "He has all of the skills that we need to build another championship team here in Laredo. We are pleased to have him here, and can't wait to see him on the ice".

The Colonials went 2-4 in the postseason during Gilbert's career, including an appearance in the 2007 CHA title game, where they suffered a heart-breaking 5-4 overtime loss to Alabama-Huntsville.

"We have always had good defensive leaders here, and we expect that Jeff will fit right in with those guys and help make our team that much better in the future", Ruskowski commented.

Gilbert's most productive offensive season, came when he was a freshman with the Colonials in 2004-05. He tallied eight goals, five of which came on the power-play, with eight assists, totaling 16 points. Gilbert scored nine power-play goals in his college career.

"We are always looking for quality special teams players, and Jeff may fit the mold we need in those situations", Ruskowski said.

Prior to his time with the Colonials, Gilbert played four seasons of junior hockey in the OPJHL, playing for four different teams. Gilbert suited up for the Durham Huskies his first season, (2000-01), while splitting the 2001-02 season between the Couchiching Terriers and the Parry Sound Shamrocks, before playing his final two junior seasons with the Aurora Tigers (2002-04).

Gilbert, 6'3, 211 pounds, finished with 69 points (23-46=69) in his junior career.
