Charlotte, NC - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced Bill Zaniboni of the Mississippi Surge has been named the Sher-Wood SPHL Player of the Month for January.

Zaniboni, a third-year pro from Plymouth, MA, went 6-2-0 for the month posting a 2.71 goals-against-average, a.921 save percentage and one shutout. Zaniboni's strong play helped the Surge go 9-2-1 in January and move to within two points of first-place Huntsville.

Zaniboni started the New Year off with a pair of wins over Knoxville (3-2) and Huntsville, a 5-4 victory that proved to be the first of three overtime wins in January. After dropping a pair of road games, Zaniboni rebounded with just the ninth 1-0 shutout in SPHL history and the first shutout of his professional career by stopping all 25 Pensacola shots in the win. He finished January on a high note by winning his next three games, highlighted by a 40-save performance in a 4-3 overtime win over Pensacola.

Currently riding a four-game win streak, Zaniboni, who played his collegiate hockey at Northern Michigan University, is second in the SPHL with a 2.73 goals-against-average and tied for fourth with 10 wins.

Also Nominated: Sam Bowles, Columbus (12 gp, 7g, 6a, 4 ppg, 2 gwg), Kevin Swider, Knoxville (11 gp, 5g, 15a, 3 ppg) and Chris Rebernik, Pensacola (14 gp, 6g, 12a, 3 ppg)
