Muskegon, MI - The Muskegon Fury bolstered their defensive corps today with the signing of defensemen Matt Gens and Dan Boeser for the 2008-09 season.

"We've been looking for some offensive defensemen with the loss of Phil Plante, Dave VanDrunen and Russ Moyer," Fury coach Bruce Ramsay said. "We have filled this area with the signing of these two players. They're both highly-skilled players who have won a championship. We're excited to have them on the team."

Gens (6-foot, 185lbs) and Boeser (6-1, 210) played for the Elmira Jackals last season, along with new Fury teammate Frank Littlejohn. Gens played in 35 games, notching 22 points (3g, 19a), while Boeser had seven assists in 20 games.

"Matt Gens and Dan Boeser fill the void we had for two top defensemen," Fury General Manager Tim Taylor said. "They both can play in any situation and provide an offensive punch for us. This was a major addition to our team."

Gens, 25, was originally a ninth round selection (278th overall) by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. After completing a four-year career at St. Cloud State, Gens played two seasons with the Rockford IceHogs in the UHL, helping the team to the 2007 Colonial Cup Championship. His best year was in 2006-07, when he recorded 39 points (8g, 31a) in 75 games with the IceHogs.

Boeser, 27, is in his fifth professional year after playing four years for the University of Wisconsin. With the Badgers in 2004, Boeser was named a finalist for the College Hockey Humanitarian Award, presented annually to college hockey's finest citizen. Boeser was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a form of cancer, after his sophomore season. He was able to defeat the disease, and worked in the community to support sick children. Boeser played one game for the Peoria Rivermen in the ECHL in 2003-04 before joining Gens with the Rockford IceHogs from 2005-07. His top season was in 2006-07, when he recorded 30 points (5g, 25a) in 64 games in the regular season, plus 12 points (2g, 10a) in 17 games in the IceHogs' run to the Colonial Cup. In 126 career games, Boeser has just 30 penalty minutes.

Terms of both players' contract were not released.
