Rio Rancho, NM - New Mexico Scorpions head coach Randy Murphy continues to build his 2008-09 roster with great defense by signing Aaron MacInnis for the upcoming season. It will be the third season MacInnis wears a Scorps jersey.
MacInnis will also serve as a player/assistant coach for the 2008-09 season. The Port Hood, N.S. native set career highs in points and assists with 42 and 32 respectively.
"As a player/assistant coach, we will look for Aaron to use his veteran leadership and help develop the younger players on the roster," said Murphy. "He adds a lot of knowledge both inside the locker room and on the ice. At the same time I am still looking to hire a full time assistant coach for the organization."
The last two seasons MacInnis has often paired with Scorps' captain Vladimir Hartinger on the power play. The two have become known as the "Shootin' Defensemen" for their hard slap shots from the blue line, that often find the back of the net.
"Aaron is a guy we will build our team around," said Murphy. "He is in the core group of guys we have always looked to bring back from last years team."
MacInnis appeared in 54 games last season and will be one of the four designated veterans on the Scorpions roster with his 302 career games played, tallying 127 points (33G, 94A). The nephew of NHL Hall of Famer Al MacInnis has come up big for the Scorpions in the playoffs scoring 17 points in 24 playoff games over the past two seasons.
