Rio Rancho, NM - Scorpions head coach Randy Murphy has signed defenseman Bill McCreary for the 2008-09 season. McCreary is the third player signed for the upcoming season.
After starting the year with the Hutsville Havoc of the Southern Professional Hockey League, the Scorpions called McCreary up for the final week of the regular season and playoffs. In 52 regular season games with both teams, the Howell, Mich. native scored 26 points (3G, 23A) and collected 61 penalty minutes.
"Billy was a great addition at the end of the regular season for us," said Murphy. "He adds a real calmness to our defense when handling the puck and we look for him to grow as a player over the next year."
McCreary came alive in the playoffs and showed his skills on both sides of the ice. The former forward showed his puck handling skills by dishing out four assists in six playoff games.
"I am excited for the chance Coach Murphy gave me last year and am excited to return for a full season," said McCreary. "My goal this year is to play smart, simple hockey and pass the puck to our forwards in some great spots and play sound defense in our own zone."
