Port Huron, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks announce that right wing Jamie Carroll has signed a contract to return in the 2008-09 season. Per team policy, details of the deal were not disclosed.
Carroll (6-2, 215 lbs) had an impressive rookie season with the Icehawks in 2007-08. He finished the regular season ranked second on the team and second among all International Hockey League rookies in scoring with 70 points (30g, 40a). He was also ranked second overall in the IHL in shots on goal with 318. His offensive success continued through the playoffs where he had nine points (2g, 7a) in 12 games.
"Carroll was a huge surprise for us last year," Head Coach and General Manager Stan Drulia said. "He controls the puck extremely well and has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. He really grew throughout the season and we expect him to have an even bigger season this year."
The 24-year old Andover, CT native garnered a number of awards during his first professional season. He was named to the IHL All-Rookie team and was named Rookie of the Year at the Icehawks Booster Club's annual awards banquet. He was also called up to the American Hockey League twice last season. He practiced with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, but did not see any game action with the team. He also played two games with the AHL Rockford IceHogs.
His efforts continue to draw attention from the American Hockey League. He is slated to attend training camp with the Worcester Sharks, an AAA affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, in September.
"My first year in Port Huron was a terrific learning experience for me and I have decided to sign with the team in an attempt to continue to develop as a hockey player in hopes of reaching the next level," Carroll said. "I have chosen to return to Port Huron because I know Stan will work hard to help me improve."
He added, "I also know that the guys that were on the team last year that are coming back will be ready to return to the Turner Cup Finals and hopefully this time have a celebratory parade in Port Huron with our trophy."
Carroll came to the Icehawks from Providence College in the NCAA where he averaged 16 points in roughly 35 games per season.
