Port Huron, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks announce the signing of Head Coach/General Manager Stan Drulia to a two-year contract. Per team policy, details of the deal were not disclosed.
Drulia enters his second year with the Icehawks and third in the city of Port Huron. He led the now defunct Port Huron Flags to the playoffs as Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations in the 2006-07 season, then returned to the Bluewater Area last season to coach the Icehawks.
In their inaugural season, Drulia directed the Icehawks to game 7 in the Turner Cup Finals versus the Fort Wayne Komets, where the team pushed the Komets to triple overtime and came within just one goal of hoisting the Turner Cup. The Icehawks went 41-29-2-4 in the regular season and 7-5 in the playoffs, defeating the Flint Generals during the first round in five games.
"We are pleased to have finalized our multi-year agreement with Stan Drulia as we had fully intended. He was instrumental in the success of our club last season," Icehawks Governor Frank Kinney said. "As a new franchise joining the league last year, we had plenty to do with little time to get it done. If not for Stan's efforts and the efforts of his staff, our organization wouldn't have experienced the level of success that we did on and off the ice."
He added, "With one year under our belt, and securing Stan's association, we feel we have set a great foundation for future years of successful professional hockey."
The Icehawks' success marked the third time that Drulia led a team to the playoffs in his six-year coaching career. In 2002, he launched his coaching career by capturing the Atlantic Coast Hockey League championship as the head coach of the Orlando Seals. He went on to coach for the Augusta Lynx and the Toledo Storm in the East Coast Hockey League from 2003 to 2006 before accepting the head coach position for the Port Huron Flags in 2006. His career winning percentage as a head coach in professional hockey is .543.
Drulia's professional career as a right winger spanned 13 years from 1989 to 2001, and included three seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League, where he scored 15 goals and dished out 27 assists, including 11 goals and 33 points during the 1999-00 season.
"I am excited about the future of hockey in Port Huron and am thrilled to be here for another season," Drulia said. "We as an organization have worked hard to build a program, both for our fans and for the development of our players. Players know that when they play for the Icehawks, they are playing for the best owners in minor league sports."
He continued, "We fell one goal shy of winning a championship last year and fully expect to make another run at bringing the Turner Cup to Port Huron."
