View Full Version : Don't over-analyze this...
I friend in Wheeling just left me this tidbit:
"There have been some rumblings this week that Wheeling may get a team in the IHL. The Nailers and city are at odds over a new lease and the manager of the arena had lunch with IHL reps."
At least that's another subject for the negative guy in QC to dwell on...

Why isn't this in the rumors section?
I'm guessing it will be shortly.

Facts don't point to any immediate movement:

WHEELING -- The Intelligencer has learned that officials from the Wheeling Nailers and WesBanco Arena have agreed to a new 1-year lease, ensuring the franchise will remain here for the rest of this season. The two sides will continue to work to make sure the team will be back for a 19th season in 2010-2011. The parties are waiting for city officials to sign off on the agreement.
If they signed a lease for one full year, then it would run through the end of October 2010. There would be no time to place an IHL franchise in there and have them play unless they were going to start a home schedule in November, which would be ridiculous even by IHL standards.
This Nailers/WesBanco thing has been going on for years now, and yet they always extend. I've found articles dating back to 2005 spelling "gloom and doom" about the Nailers trying to work out a lease.

Heh heh. You used "IHL" and "standards" in the same sentence.
Seriously. Why isn't this garbage in the rumors section?

Man, those traveling Komet fans really helped that number, eh?!
Really, don't you ever tire of looking like a complete goofball? I'm pretty sure other Komet and IHL fans have even told you to stow it already... you only give other Komet fans more grief to take overall because of your username, and they don't need it quite frankly.
I sincerely doubt Wheeling is going anywhere. History shows rumors always spring up, and that getting a lease done isn't easy apparently... but they always do.
Here I thought everyone from QC was negative...Just sayin'
Is there an echo in here?

Us QC fans are very flattered that almost every IHL thread now has some reference to us in it right off the bat.
Hopefully Wheeling fans can extend this same courtesy to us if they join the league.

At least one Wheeling fan has already been warned what to expect (and ignore).

Here's an article about the problems between Nailers management and arena management.

Frankly, changing leagues isn't going to solve the problems highlighted in this article.

That's a really, really good article summing it all up.
It sounds like WesBanco isn't really understanding some of the economic realities right now, and that there's not good communication between arena ownership and Nailer ownership.
Is WesBanco really in that bad of shape though? The video board would have been nice, but isn't really a big deal. A leaky roof though... that's a whole other issue and a serious thing.

The roof and the scoreboard gets a lot of focus in the article, but the biggest problem is the building costs. Arena management obviously believes they cannot continue at the same rates they are currently charging the Nailers. Any new party that comes in will be paying more to use the arena.
The selling point for prospective IHL owners is the overall cost structure savings, particularly on travel. While there may be some savings on travel by moving from the ECHL to the IHL, I believe that savings will be wiped out by the increase to rent the arena.

"Phase one was the roof being redone, and unfortunately there are still people being dripped on. ... (Fans) don't like that," Brooks said.
Sounds like this building is ready for the IHL.
